Junior Golf Tour of Asia Set to Launch

Nov 3, 2017   //   by Mathilda   //   golf industry, Latest News  //  No Comments

As part of a new initiative to propel Asia’s rising stars of junior golf to success at the American University level, the Junior Golf Tour of Asia (JGTA) will launch its AJGA-sanctioned Junior Golf Tour next month.

The inaugural event will be held at Bintan Lagoon Resort, on the Indonesian island of Bintan, a 75-minute ferry ride from Singapore, from December 20-22.

The JGTA is the sanctioning body in Asia for American Junior Golf Association (AJGA) Performance Based Entry (PBE) Status, and represents the series of tournaments throughout the region, where players can build their PBE Status through their final ranking on the JGTA’s Junior Order of Merit.

For the first time, the next generation of prominent golfers in Asia can build AJGA PBE Status by competing in JGTA events, and can begin doing so at the JGTA Bintan Lagoon Junior Championship.

As well as a 54-hole stroke play tournament, there will be seminars from JGTA officials, imparting tips and advice to young golfers vying for admission into the top university golf programmes in the United States.

Kyi Hla Han, Founder-Director of the JGTA and former Executive Chairman of the Asian Tour, said: “The mission of the JGTA is to provide a regional platform of elite competition for Asia’s rising stars of junior golf that can actually help those players achieve high-level American College golf opportunities, where they can achieve a university education while taking their game to the next level while playing in the NCAA.

“By aligning with the AJGA – which has produced the vast majority of college and professional golfers – and giving juniors an opportunity to build their AJGA PBE Status without having to travel to the US, the JGTA strives to make a real difference here in Asia.”

The JGTA plans to work with venues around the region to grow the game in Asia at the highest level of junior competition, while providing a conducive environment for participants aged between 12 and 18.

Ken Khua, Director of Golf, Bintan Lagoon Resort, said: “We are thrilled to be the official host venue for the launch of the JGTA.”

Han, whose design company is an Associate Business Member of the Asian Golf Industry Federation, added: “Showcasing the JGTA at such a fantastic resort during the holiday season was a major focus of the JGTA.

“Bintan Lagoon Resort has played host to events on the Asian Tour and offers a world-class resort experience and golfing venue to challenge the juniors who will be competing in the inaugural event.”
