Els Club Malaysia Prepares for Inaugural Junior Golf Challenge

May 4, 2018   //   by Mathilda   //   golf industry, Latest News  //  No Comments

Final course preparations are under way as the award-winning Els Club Malaysia gets set to host 100 budding juniors at the inaugural ‘Junior Golf Challenge’.

To be played over the Els Club Desaru Coast Ocean Course and Academy Course on May 11-12, the event features three age group categories – Division A: 16-18 years; Division B: 12-15 years and Division C: 11 years and under.

Designed to give junior golfers the experience of playing in a competitive environment and under professional event conditions, entrants will have a dedicated locker and their own food and beverage area, while parents are encouraged to support the golfers on their way round the course as spectators of the event.

The competition will also feature as part of the Johor Junior Series SUKMA Qualifying, being the fourth leg of the series.

“We are delighted to be hosting such a great event for juniors and look forward to inviting as many as possible to come and take part in the very first Junior Golf Challenge here at The Els Club Desaru Coast,” said Stephen Havrilla, General Manager, The Els Club Malaysia, a Golf Course Facility member of the Asian Golf Industry Federation.

“With our outstanding facilities and services, this is the ideal venue for the competitors to continue their golfing development and we are excited about demonstrating that.”

Hello Kitty, Legoland, Thomas Town and Kidzania have partnered with the event to add to the after-golf festivities.

Both the Ocean and Academy courses will provide a test to these promising golfers. The Ocean, designed by Ernie Els, offers 27 holes of picturesque beauty, stretching across the three loops of nine: The Lakes, The Coast and The Ridge.

The Division A and B juniors will test their skills against this shoreline challenge on the Ridge and Coast sets of nine during the tournament.

Division C players will take on the Academy Course, which is set up to reward steady play and forgive wayward shots.

The ethos of the competition comes from the Els Performance Golf Academy Little Easy Young Athlete programme, which prioritises development initiatives which allow juniors to learn, enjoy, improve and play.

The programme provides tuition in a structured format and develops golf skills, with tutors on-hand to enhance understanding of the game and hone in on individual technical aspects.

PGA Head Professional PJ Van Merch said: “The Junior Golf Challenge is a fantastic opportunity for us to showcase our amazing facility to families and show how we can support the growth of the game regionally.”
