A bold initiative of the Indian Golf Industry Association (IGIA) aims to introduce 28,000 newcomers to the game in the space of just one week.

‘India Learn Golf Week’ is set to take place over a number of golf courses in the country from September 25 to October 1.

The campaign has the endorsement of the Professional Golfers’ Association (PGA) of America and is supported by the Indian Golf Union (IGU), Women’s Golf Association of India (WGAI), Golf Course Superintendents & Managers Association of India (GCS&MAI) and National Golf Academy of India (NGAI).

Devang Shah, President of the IGIA, said the Association had taken on this project because ‘the growth of the golf industry is dependent on the expansion of the game in the form of increase in the number of golf courses and golfers’.

“To make it a success we need the support and participation of all stakeholders in the business,” said Shah, adding that the IGIA is in touch with all golf courses in the country with details of the scheme.

The IGIA said the tentative target is to involve 40 clubs across 14 cities in India.

To be conducted in simultaneous locations throughout the week, the undertaking will include support from past and current professional golfers.

The stated immediate objective is to induct 28,000 new golfers while the long-term objective is to bring in 100,000 people into the game.
